Mobility is a Lifestyle Choice!

There are many people who are lucky enough to be able to continue to travel and keep active well into their later years. But what do you do if things don’t come so easy? Planning for and managing an active later life is not more important than ever.

We only have to witness the London marathon and see the scores of over 65s completing the event and I think we can all take our hats off to Paul Freedman and Iva Barr, both in their 80’s, who achieved the amazing feat of finishing this physically challenging race.  However, for many of us mobility (or lack of) can really affect how active we are as we get older.

The challenge of mobility is experienced in varying degrees depending on the individual and can have a limiting effect on lifestyle choices. For some, this can mean they can no longer continue their passion for playing football and have decided to take up golf, for others a simple trip to a local supermarket would be relative to running a marathon.

The good news is you are not alone in the struggle with mobility and the world is slowly becoming a much more ‘mobility’ friendly place.

There are a whole host of products designed to make getting around easier and due to massive consumer demand these products have been developed over the years making them more suitable for modern living needs.

Travelling in the UK has been made more accessible with the introduction of the equality act of 2010. This act provides support for those less mobile by reinforcing the previous disability act. This act requires businesses and councils to provide facilities which are accessible by everyone meaning that there are special design considerations when new buildings go up or when existing buildings are upgraded. Much of the legislation has complemented the products on the market such as ramped access to assist those needing to use wheelchairs or mobility scooters. Although there is still a lot more to be done, it’s a move in the right direction.
