…you know ESW since you posted this message there’s been an almost tangiable non-response like nobody dare write anything… perhaps just in case "the missus" might see it…

Wakefield, West Yorks.

… is a woman.

I went to a girl’s grammar school. Previously there had only been a Secondary Modern School and the County Council were very forward looking in that they built a girl’s grammar school first. In fact it must have been another 20 years before there was a boy’s grammar school in the area. I was one of the first intake of pupils in the new school and remember the grand official opening. Baroness (later Lady) Mary Stocks came to talk to us and impressed on us the importance of educating young ‘gels’. Not only were we the mothers of the future and would play an essential role in eductating our children, an intelligent and educated wife was essential to the successful career of our husbands. At the time it was still expected that girls would marry and have a career as a homemaker.

50 years on the world is a very different place. Is there still a woman behind every great man?
