Travelling to as much of the world as possible is an ambition of many Silver Travellers – but how many of us have clocked up over 100 countries and written a book about their experiences? This is what Peter Harris has done in his new book ‘A Wayward Spirit’. Of course, most of his travels were done before he ‘qualified’ as a Silver Traveller, but his hyperactive drive has already taken him to Cambodia, Myanmar, Ireland and France this year and he does not plan to slow down any time soon.

His remarkable stories come mainly from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America and they describe how he was shipwrecked in a typhoon in the Pacific, faced gunfire in Guatemala, escaped from a coup in Iran and a hotel fire in Hong Kong and was imprisoned overnight in Greece in a case of mistaken identity. Along the way, his many experiences also include a great deal of useful advice on local foods to avoid and how not to get lost in Tokyo!

Peter J Harris - author of 'A Wayward Spirit' As a business traveller, Peter Harris was involved over the years in international education and tourism. More recently, he became attracted to a deeper meaning in his life and he has been spending more time on visits to retreats, shrines and gurus. He has walked the Camino pilgrimage in Spain several times and climbed the Himalayas to raise thousands of pounds for charitable causes. These include founding a school in Cambodia for the children he discovered living on rubbish dumps – he calls them ‘The Dumpsters’ – and supporting a project in Thailand to provide education for teenage girls to help them to avoid prostitution.
