Holland America Line – Eurodam – Cruise Taster

Eurodam at Port of Tyne's Nothumbrian Quay On a sunny July morning a group of intrepid Silver Travellers found ourselves at Newcastle’s Port of Tyne Cruise Terminal. We had come to have a ship visit and lunch on Holland America Line’s Eurodam and I was to be their Silver Travel host for the day.

To be honest I was a bit apprehensive about this visit. I have always preferred small ships with less than 300 people onboard with my adventure cruising background so I wondered how I would cope with this large ship which lay alongside the Northumbrian quay.

As it turned out I need not have worried and I think it’s safe to say we were all mightily impressed with her. After the excellent, smooth check in and getting to know each other we agreed that rather than a large group we would split up and explore on our own. An agreement I thought admirable as then we could see what we wanted to see and not act as if we were following behind a tour guide with a red flag!

Lido Eurodam furthers the evolution of the company’s sophisticated mid-sized ships with 11 passenger decks, a new topside Pan-Asian restaurant and lounge surrounded by panoramic views, an Explorer’s Lounge bar, a new Italian restaurant adjacent to the Lido, elegant luxury jewellery boutique, new atrium bar area, an enhanced and reconfigured show lounge and a new photographic and imaging centre.

I loved the Lido Bar and Grill and its pool and the cosy cinema that has selection of films on offer. As I said above the new show lounge is something else with three levels of seating with sophisticated lighting and a wide range of events.

Free workshops in the Digital Centre are led by Microsoft-trained experts who show even the most novice camera or computer user how to take better photos, videos, edit pictures and create scrapbooks using a variety of Microsoft Windows and Windows Live services. You can learn how to share all your digital memories through email, blogging and social networking – so friends and family can see where you’ve been cruising even before you return home.

Panorama Lounge I was once told by a seasoned cruise writer that “If you want to know whether it’s a good ship go and look at the toilets”. So off we went. I have to say they were immaculately clean, well decorated and with hand towels for your personal use.

Following in the Holland America Line tradition, Eurodam features an exquisite art collection and has some amazing little touches scattered around the ship as well as high quality shops. The Panorama lounge was simply stunning and I have to say an outstanding feature of this ship is the seating with many areas where you can sit and relax in comfort, and privacy.

So after exploring the ship we met up outside the lower level Rembrandt Restaurant at the stern. Large windows gave us excellent views; so by the way do the lifts which are on the side of the ship’s hull so as you use them you get vistas of the port or ocean.

Group The food was very, very good with a wide choice and the service excellent. There are several dining options scattered around Eurodam each offering different cuisines and dining experiences and I would certainly try a different one whenever I could to enjoy the full ambience of this ship.

I really enjoyed this visit and I would urge you to book up for any others you see in your area. The others in the group too were impressed by the whole set up. It’s very difficult when you’re writing a review like this not to make it sound like an advert but I can honestly say this idea of ship visits is excellent. It gives you a taste of the vessel and no doubt there will be a rush to book for the next Holland America visit to Newcastle.
